First and foremost, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! I hope everyone brought in the New Year safely and surrounded by friends and loved ones. I’m so excited to be at the start of a brand new year. 2013 was a crazy, hard, exciting, scary, and transformative year for me. It matured me and I defiantly felt the growing pains. All of this growth has made me stronger as a person, and knowing what I know now I’m thankful for the good and bad that came along with 2013. With all that said I’m ready to take on 2014 and do so fearlessly. I’m not letting my short comings, fears, anxieties or whatever hold me back. I’m going for it!
Hope your holiday stuff is going well and semi-stress free. My week has been tiring but eventful as I juggle Christmas shopping, my ludicrous job, and journeying deeper into social media as a part time career path. I had an outing with my friends at the Rochester Bloggers Network on Thursday night to a new eatery called Havana Cabana, which is a Cuban Cafe’ and Rum Bar. It’s next to Vinyl and is in the old 289 building. I got to meet and network with some great people. Some fellow bloggers, and people working in social media. Havana Cabana has an upscale yet relaxed and intimate feel to it. It’s a great place for a date night or dinner a few close friends. There are a host of cocktails including a assortment of Mojitos. The food is really good! There are a few varieties of flat bread pizzas which are all delicious. There is one that has blackberries on it. Yes, you read it right blackberries. It’s tasty and unexpected. The only con is the tiny seeds get I between your teeth, but just have a toothpick on hand and keep eating. A big thanks to the Rochester Bloggers Network and the Rochester A-List for expanding my dining horizons.
In other news… I joined Keek which is like YouTube’s younger brother that only shoots 36 sec. videos. It’s been around for a minute now its very easy to post to, and has a good following, so I figured I’d check it out. There are lots of young/trendy celebs like the whole Kardashian family and on it which maybe a draw for some. I’ll be posting vids soon so be sure to check them out and comment!
As all of you all know the former South African President, Nelson Mandela has passed away at age 95. Mandela spent 27 years in prison and went on to become the first black President of South Africa. Upon his release Mandela broke the chains of apartheid which was a system of racial segregation that was enforced through legislation. These are all things we know about Pres. Mandela, but here are 5 facts you probably didn’t know about this great man.
1. Nelson often went out in disguise.
After his verdict trial he started going out secretly around South Africa in order to gain supposed for his organization, The African National Congress. This gave him the nickname “The Black Pimpernel” among government troops.
2. Mandela is a natural born troublemaker.
His forename is “Rolihlahla” which roughly translates to troublemaker.
3. Mandela was not only a President, but royalty as well. His great grandfather on his father’s side was the king of the Thembu people from what is now the Eastern Cape Province.
4. Nelson Mandela: Style Icon
Mr. Mandela was a very sharp dresser and once he became President he had several outfit changes a day, and made Madiba shirts popular. A type of shirt designed by his personal designer Yusuf Surtee.
5. Nelson Mandela suffered permanent eye damage due to the sun while in the prison yard of Rodden Island, were he slept on a straw mat in a damp room and was forced to break rocks into smaller pieces if rock. He spent the first 18 years of his sentence on this Island in solitary confinement.
This great and courageous man will be missed, but his actions and efforts will live on for generations in South Africans.
Hey everybody I decided to add a new section to my blog called The Last Word and its basically an end of the day journal. So here we go…
1.I feel like I have been so busy that I don’t have time to focus on the things I love to do. Those things being writing and blogging. When I do have the time I’m too tired to even think about a subject to write about. That is the reason I’ve been so bad at posting. I’m going to try a few new things and work on managing my time better.
2.I’m seriously looking into leaving my job, and starting a small company. I have always wanted to do something I’m passionate about. At my current job the people are nice and I have learned many life lessons, but I don’t make any money. I struggle to pay bills which isn’t good especially when you’re a black young man that wants a good line of credit. I will fill all of you in about me small business decision at a later date. Now to the main subject at hand! I’ve been seriously thinking about moving for a long time. I love Rochester and it will always be my home, but I feel like I’m in a jacket that is 3 sizes too small. I have decided to move to New York City. This was not a random decision and while I love New York a lot more went into my choice. The very first was career. For those of you that don’t know I am going to school for communication and want to get into Public Relations more specifically Fashion and Entertainment PR. There are only a hand full of places to go for this and Cali. is a bit far for me. I feel very at peace with the decision and I look forward to this new chapter. The move will take place this upcoming summer. I will share all the little details at a later date. Thanks guys and that is The Last Word! G’Night!
It has just been announced that Israeli actress, Gal Gadet has been cast as DC’s legendary female heroine Wonder Woman in the next installment of Man of Steel. Gal is best know for her role in Fast and Furious 6. While the movie is at the moment untitled the focus is on the conflict between Superman and Batman.
Henry Cavil returns to his role as Kal-El and Ben Affleck has been cast as The Dark Knight. It was rumored that other members of DC’s Justice League like The Flash and Nightwing will make a cameo but that has not been confirmed. Zack Snyder, the sequel’s director explains why he chose Gal saying “Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role. We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character.”
Upon finding out she nabbed the iconic part, Gadet tweeted: “Wonder Women! So exciting!!! Can’t express how happy I am :))))”
My concern as guy that is into comics and fairly picky about character portrayal is Gal’s height and frame. Wonder Woman is a powerful Amazon that stands at 6’0 with blue eyes and an athletic build. Gadet stands at 5’9 and is slender in build. The former Miss.Israel is gorgeous and dark haired, but I’m afraid that is all Wonder Woman and Gal have in common. I may be able to over look the fact that she is short if she can put on some muscle and do justice to the character and really bring her to life. It worked for Hugh Jackman ( 6’3) who plays Marvel’s Wolverine (5’3).
So as you all know summer is winding down and things are getting more and more busy for me, my mind can’t help but go back to the most recent vacation I took. It was 3 weeks ago now. It was a weekend getaway to Basking Ridge, NJ for my good buddy’s wedding. I was my first time driving that far completely solo. The whole weekend from start to finish was just amazing and fun. The wedding of my friends Tony and Sharon was beautiful. It was so fun and even included a flash mob which yours truly was about of. I just want to share a fews pics from my weekend getaway.
P.S. The Hotel I stayed at was the Dolce Hotel and Resorts in Basking Ridge. It is a classy, clean, and upscale place. I recommend it. It can be a little pricey but its worth it. Basking Ridge itself is a very nice. It’s like something out of Gilmore Girls just with a little more money. I think the only other black person I saw was my friend Eli.
I would seriously drive down for a little weekend get away in Basking Ridge again. I’d be the only black person but if any other brothas or sistas want to tag along and know how to tip at restaurants…I’m all for it!
